On a folded-paper island at night, a girl looks through a telescope at the moon while her mentor points up at it, beside an easel with a simple chart and a table with an open notebook and a globe.

Mastery checks and retention

How we plan to measure whether skills stay learned in the weeks and months after a mastery check.

Why passing once isn’t enough

Most of us have crammed for a test and forgotten it a week later. Passing a check shows a skill is there today. What families care about is whether it’s still there months later, when the next unit builds on it. This study is about that second question.

What we plan to measure

We’ll come back to skills at planned intervals after a learner first shows mastery, with short checks that look different from the original questions, so we’re testing understanding rather than memory of a particular problem. We’ll record what was kept, what faded, and how quickly a faded skill comes back with a little practice.

Mastery today isn’t the same as mastery months from now.

The short version

What we expect, and why

Research on memory has long found that recalling something, and spacing that recall out over time, helps learning last longer than rereading or cramming. We’ll test whether our version of this works for our learners, rather than assume it does.

How we’ll keep ourselves honest

We’ll publish the design before the results, so anyone can see the question was set fairly. One centre is a small sample, and we’ll say so. Data will be grouped and de-identified, and any family can choose not to be included.

What you’ll take away

  1. 01Mastery today isn’t the same as mastery months from now.
  2. 02We’ll check skills again, weeks and months later.
  3. 03The design comes first, the results after.
