On a paper island, a father kneels beside his daughter where the path forks under a signpost, and they read a paper map together; one way leads to the Hikmah centre, where a mentor waves from the door.

How Hikmah compares

Same first step. A different plan.

Your child deserves the right fit. Here is how the model we’re building for Ottawa compares with Kumon, Mathnasium, Sylvan and Huntington, from their own public websites.

  • Four learning-centre brands

What they share

An assessment, then a plan. After that, they part ways.

Kumon, Mathnasium, Sylvan and Huntington all begin with an assessment and a personalized plan, as Hikmah will. The differences are in what the plan builds, and in how you hear about progress.

The first step

  1. HikmahA diagnostic assessment, free for founding families
  2. KumonA free placement test
  3. MathnasiumA free diagnostic, written and verbal
  4. SylvanThe free Insight™ Assessment, one subject
  5. HuntingtonThe Academic Evaluation, about 2.5 to 3 hours
ThenA personalized plan

Where they differ

  1. What the plan builds

All five teach school subjects. We found no separate thinking and leadership program at the other four.

Hikmah will teach it in every program, through projects.

  2. Who works with your child

From worksheets done largely on their own to a dedicated, certified educator.

At Hikmah, one mentor will know your child and ask more than tell.

  3. How you hear about progress

A portal, reports, conferences or contact with the classroom teacher.

Hikmah plans a written progress update every month, in plain words.

Since 1954 · Several Ottawa centres

Kumon

Kumon builds a daily habit of independent practice in math and reading, from preschool to secondary school. Children work through small-step worksheets and correct their mistakes until they reach 100%, twice a week at the centre and at home on the other days.

Both move a child on only when a skill holds. Kumon is built for learning mostly on your own, with an Instructor who plans, evaluates and guides; Hikmah will be built around a mentor who asks questions beside your child.

Since 2002 · At least four Ottawa centres

Mathnasium

Mathnasium is a math-only learning centre for Kindergarten to Grade 12. It starts with a free diagnostic, written and verbal, teaches from a personalized plan, and prepares students for the EQAO tests in Grades 3, 6 and 9.

Mathnasium goes deep in one subject. Hikmah will teach math, reading and writing in one plan, with thinking and leadership alongside.

Since 1979 · Two Ottawa centres

Sylvan

Sylvan Learning offers a broad menu, from math, reading, writing, science and foreign language to test prep and STEM camps. Sessions typically run about an hour, with teachers it describes as certified, using adaptive technology.

Sylvan offers the broader menu of subjects, test prep and camps. Hikmah’s will be narrower, with thinking and leadership taught alongside the foundations.

Huntington

Huntington’s model is clear: a long first evaluation, a dedicated, certified tutor and regular conferences with parents. For an Ottawa family, the first question is access: on its website in November 2026, we found no Huntington centres in Canada.

Huntington names a dedicated, certified tutor and regular parent conferences. Hikmah plans one mentor for your child and a written progress update every month.
