Is my child behind, or just bored?

A child who has checked out might be struggling, or might be ready for more. The signs overlap, and the right response is very different.

Why they look alike

A bored child and a struggling child can both stop paying attention, rush their work or say school is pointless. Both can bring home uneven marks. From the outside it’s hard to tell which is happening, and sometimes it’s both: ahead in one subject, stuck in another.

Clues to look for

Does your child avoid certain tasks but race through others? Do they grasp ideas quickly when you talk, but struggle to get them on paper? Do they ask big questions that school doesn’t seem to make room for? Patterns like these point in different directions.

Struggling and bored can look the same.

The short version

Getting a clearer picture

Talk with their teacher, and with your child. A good diagnostic assessment can show both what is secure and where the gaps are, so the answer isn’t a guess. A plan can then stretch your child where they’re ready and fix what is holding them back.
